micro1 has gone from a small AI recruiting startup to one of the fastest-growing companies in AI training work. Forbes reported in 2026 that it raised more than $100 million at a $4 billion valuation, up from $500 million a year earlier. Searches for micro1 have grown more than eightfold in the past year, and so has the number of people asking whether it's legit and why they keep failing its AI interview.

This review explains what micro1 is, what it pays, how its "Zara" AI interview and certification work, and what experts report after getting in. We read micro1's expert pages, its candidate terms and privacy notice, its expert help library and its current job listings on October 5, 2026, along with recent Reddit posts. Rates and policies change, so check the terms in any offer.

Is micro1 Legit?

Yes. micro1 is a real San Francisco company that recruits experts to train and evaluate AI models for frontier AI labs and large enterprises. Forbes reported that its customers include frontier AI labs, Microsoft, Amazon and robotics company 1X. Experts sign contracts through Deel, track time in Hubstaff and are paid twice a month.

The common complaints are about the hiring funnel, not about scams: many people pass the AI interview, get "certified" and then never get a project. Others report offers far below the posted pay range, or slow support. Those problems are real, but they're different from a company that doesn't pay.

How Much Does micro1 Pay?

micro1 lists a pay range on every opening, and its expert support program promises you'll see the rate before you accept a project. Recent openings on its Opportunities page (posted September 30 to October 3, 2026) included:

  • Content Writer & Editor: $22 to $70/hour
  • Software Engineer: $30 to $100/hour
  • Generalist, U.S. tax workflow evaluation: $30 to $110/hour
  • CAD Design Expert: $40 to $90/hour
  • Simulation Expert (3D environments): $60 to $150/hour
  • Personal Finance Expert (Canada or UK): $90 to $110/hour
  • Hospitalist Reviewer: $100 to $150/hour
  • Bilingual psychologists and psychiatrists (Cantonese, Vietnamese, Russian): $100 to $200/hour
  • Investment Banking Associate: $150 to $220/hour
  • Derivatives Counsel (ISDA specialist): $180 to $200/hour
  • Pharmaceutical Expert: $80 to $285/hour

There are also robotics data jobs where you record yourself doing everyday or trade tasks. A plumber role, for example, lists $20 to $30/hour, and micro1 pays only for approved recordings.

The range isn't the offer. Your rate is set in your contract, and it can sit at the bottom of the range or below it. In October, one expert on r/micro1_ai said a data scientist role posted at $245 to $280/hour came with a $90/hour offer, and support didn't reply to their questions about it.

Three pay types. micro1's help library says each project uses one of these:

  • Hourly: You're paid for approved hours tracked in Hubstaff.
  • Pay per task: Each approved task pays your hourly rate times a "payout multiple," no matter how long it takes.
  • Flat fee: A fixed amount per approved task, and nothing for rejected or incomplete work.

Most projects expect about 15 to 20 hours a week, and you can do more when there's work.

Who Can Work for micro1?

micro1 hires globally, with openings from early-career roles to PhDs and industry leaders. It says it can't hire anyone living in Afghanistan, Belarus, China, Cuba, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Hong Kong, Iran, Iraq, Libya, Macao, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Ukraine, Venezuela or Yemen. The list can change quickly. In October, one expert described recent overnight lockouts for people in Ethiopia. You must be at least 18.

ID verification accepts an unexpired government-issued passport, driver's license or national ID. Your physical ID has to be scanned with your camera, along with a selfie. micro1 says IDs in English or Arabic usually verify within minutes, while others can take up to 72 hours for manual review.

You're an independent contractor. You use your own computer, handle your own taxes and get no benefits. US contractors can find a 1099-NEC in Deel.

How the micro1 Hiring Process Works

  1. Apply for an opening on the Opportunities page, or choose a skill to get certified in.
  2. Take the AI interview with Zara, micro1's AI recruiter. It takes 20 to 40 minutes depending on the skill and includes open-ended and scenario-based questions. Technical roles add a coding challenge and annotator roles add a data exercise. You get a result right away.
  3. Verify your ID and complete your profile to become "certified."
  4. Wait for a match. Certified experts get invitations when projects fit their verified skills, and can also apply to open roles. Applications show a status such as "Hiring Manager Reviewing" while a client decides.
  5. Pass any client screening, sign your contract through Deel, complete Deel's KYC check, and a background check through KarmaCheck.
  6. Join the project's Slack, get a micro1 expert email and start tracking time in Hubstaff.

micro1 says plainly that certification doesn't guarantee a job. It only makes you eligible. This is where most frustration comes from. Posts on r/micro1_ai in October included "30+ applications on micro1 and still no selection" and a candidate who had been in "Hiring Manager Reviewing" for more than 30 days. Others got lucky: one person was picked the day after applying for their fifth role, and another said their 52nd birthday brought their fifth micro1 project.

Tips for Passing the Zara AI Interview

  • Use the free mock interviews at micro1.ai/interview-prep before taking the real one.
  • Choose one core skill you can talk about in depth. micro1's guide lets you pick the skill you're evaluated on, and adding more certified skills later widens your matches.
  • Answer with specifics. Scenario questions test how you reason through real problems, so walk through actual cases from your work.
  • Don't get help. micro1's candidate terms require your answers to be your own and forbid copying or screenshotting the interview. micro1 also says it may report violations to prospective employers.
  • Ask for feedback if you're not certified. micro1 says this option is available, although one candidate said they couldn't find it.

How and When micro1 Pays

micro1 pays twice a month in US dollars through Deel, which it calls payroll.micro1.ai:

  • Work from the 1st to the 15th: paid around the 20th
  • Work from the 16th to the end of the month: paid around the 5th of the next month

Approvals usually come through around the 3rd and the 18th. Pay can slip by a business day for US contractors, and moves to the next business day after weekends and US bank holidays. Hubstaff hours don't appear in Deel as you work. They're exported at the end of each cycle and show up on your invoice. You can withdraw from Deel by bank transfer, PayPal, Wise and other methods it supports.

Rest credits. Starting October 1, 2026, experts who earn pay in at least four payout cycles in a quarter get a quarterly bonus of about 1% of their earnings, with a minimum of $75.

Referrals. micro1 pays a flat referral bonus of up to $3,000, set per job, after your referral is hired and works 10 hours. Many Reddit posts push referral links. One expert shared an email in which micro1 suggested they refer others while waiting for a project, and one referrer said a payout hadn't arrived a week after their referral qualified.

Read the Contract Before You Sign

micro1's own summary of its expert agreement covers points worth understanding first:

  • Work product. Anything you create "in connection with your services" belongs to micro1, and you waive your moral rights to it. One expert on Reddit said their contract seemed to reach further, into work created outside micro1. micro1's summary doesn't say that, but read the IP section of your contract closely, and ask before signing if you build things on the side.
  • Confidentiality. You can't disclose the client, or even the existence of your agreement.
  • Conflicts. You confirm you aren't currently employed by a foundational AI model company, and you agree not to solicit micro1's staff or contractors for a year after you leave.
  • Termination. micro1 can end your contract immediately with written notice. You have to give 5 business days' notice.
  • Disputes. Claims go to binding arbitration with JAMS, and you waive jury trials and class actions.
  • Biometrics. The contract has a biometric data clause, but micro1 says most text-based projects don't record your voice, face or video.

Your interview data. Under micro1's candidate terms, it owns your interview recording, answers and results. Its privacy notice says it may use de-identified interview audio, video and transcripts to train its own models, but doesn't share them with AI labs for training. To opt out, you have to delete your account.

What Experts Say

The good:

  • One expert called micro1's onboarding friendly and easy to understand, and micro1 publishes praise from experts on its own site.
  • One expert who failed a client's screening said they were still paid for the hours they spent on it.
  • micro1's "Human 1st" expert support program goes further than most competitors. It includes rest credits, a confidential third-party reporting hotline, mental health support after 100 hours, emergency grants and a stated right to appeal pay and status decisions.

The bad:

  • No match after certification. This is the most common complaint by far.
  • Offers below the posted range, as in the data scientist example above.
  • Slow support. Experts report unanswered emails about pay, onboarding and referral payouts, plus dashboard glitches and Slack invites that don't work.
  • Hours missing from Hubstaff. In September, an expert said hours they had tracked didn't show up in the Hubstaff app and got no reply for more than a week across email, Slack and Reddit.
  • Removed posts. Experts say critical posts get removed from micro1's subreddit, so some post their complaints on other subreddits instead.

micro1 Pros and Cons

  • Strict contract terms: broad IP assignment, arbitration, a class-action waiver and termination at any time
  • Interview data can be used to train micro1's own models unless you delete your account
  • Slow, inconsistent support

Common Questions About micro1

Is micro1 real or fake?

It's real. micro1 is a venture-backed San Francisco company that works with frontier AI labs and large tech companies, pays experts through Deel and has a public help library for experts. Scammers do use its name, so check that emails come from @micro1.ai, @micro1.io or @micro1.co.

Does micro1 pay well?

Posted ranges are high for professionals, with many medical, legal and finance roles at $100/hour or more. Generalist, writing and recording roles pay less, and your actual offer can be at or below the low end of the range.

Is the micro1 AI interview safe?

It's a recorded video interview run on micro1's own platform. It's safe in the sense of being a legitimate step, but you give up a lot: micro1 owns the recording and results and can use de-identified versions to train its own AI. Don't share confidential details from current or former employers in your answers.

How long does it take to get a project after certification?

There's no set timeline. Some experts are picked within a day of applying, while others wait months or never get matched. Certifying more skills and applying directly to open roles improves your chances.

Is micro1 Worth It?

If you're a professional in a field micro1 is recruiting for, such as medicine, law, finance, engineering or a second language, micro1 is worth applying to. It pays on a fixed twice-monthly schedule, offers more expert protections than most rivals, and posts some of the highest rates in AI training work.

Go in with the right expectations. The Zara interview is only the first filter, certification isn't a job, and your offer may be lower than the listing. Read the contract before you sign, especially the IP and arbitration sections, and apply to other platforms while you wait.
