Mercor recruits doctors, lawyers, engineers, PhDs and other professionals to train AI models for the biggest labs, and its pay is among the highest in AI training work: an average contracted rate of $108 an hour, according to its own site. It has also had a hard year. A March 2026 data breach led to a wave of contractor lawsuits, and its subreddits are full of people asking whether Mercor is legit, and why they still haven't been hired.
This review covers what Mercor is, what it pays, how hiring works, and what to watch out for. We read Mercor's Experts page, its current job listings and the 40-plus pages in its contractor help center on October 5, 2026, along with news coverage and recent contractor posts on Reddit. Rates and rules change often, so check the terms in any offer you get.
Is Mercor Legit?
Yes. Mercor is a real San Francisco company that pays contractors to train and evaluate AI models. TechCrunch reported in April 2026 that it was valued at $10 billion and on pace for more than $1 billion in annual revenue, and Meta and OpenAI have both been reported as customers. Mercor says it pays out more than $4 million a day. It makes money by adding a margin on top of the rate it pays you, so it only earns when you're placed on a project.
Mercor is legitimate, but that doesn't make it easy. Many applicants never get an offer, projects end without warning, and the monitoring rules are strict. The biggest red flag in 2026 wasn't a scam. It was a security breach that exposed contractor data, covered below.
What Does Mercor Do?
Mercor is a hiring marketplace for AI training work. AI labs post projects, and Mercor recruits, screens and pays the experts who do the work. Its Experts page describes the work as reviewing model outputs, creating teaching examples and judging quality across fields like software engineering, finance, healthcare, law, consulting and creative work.
In practice, contractors write hard prompts and ideal answers, build grading rubrics, rate and compare AI responses, and review specialist content for accuracy. Projects run anywhere from a few weeks to several months and can be extended, shortened or ended early.
How Much Does Mercor Pay?
Mercor advertises an average contracted rate of $108/hour, with role-specific ranges from $60 to $250/hour. The average is pulled up by specialist roles. Listings on its Explore page on October 5, 2026 included:
- Generalist (must own a MacBook): $50 to $60/hour
- Quality Analyst: $20 to $50/hour
- Multimodal Image Expert: $30/hour
- B2B Sales Expert (US only, 3+ years of experience): $50 to $70/hour
- STEM PhDs and technical domain experts: $55 to $80/hour
- Financial crime, AML and KYC analysts: $75 to $100/hour
- Chemists and specialty engineers: $65 to $75 per task
Your rate is set in your offer, and contractors report big differences even on the same project. One thread on a large project in September compared $190/hour and $50/hour rates. Some offers also mix pay types: one contractor received an email promising $30/hour after onboarding, while the offer itself listed $20 per task for the assessment stage. Read the offer, not the email, and take a screenshot of the rate before you accept.
Hourly vs. per-task pay. Most contracts are hourly and tracked in Insightful (see below), and each one sets a weekly hour cap. Deliverable-based contracts pay a fixed amount for each completed and approved task, with no hourly minimum. Projects can also switch between the two partway through. Several contractors on Reddit say per-task projects with many rounds of reviewer revisions worked out to far less than the advertised rate.
Who Can Work for Mercor?
Mercor says its minimum is typically undergraduate-level expertise in a field, and many projects want years of professional experience or an advanced degree. You don't need AI experience. Generalist and language roles exist, but most of the well-paid work goes to people with credentials Mercor can verify.
Location. Mercor hires globally, but a listing that doesn't name a region is assumed to be open to the US, Canada, the UK and the EU. It also publishes a list of about 90 places where it can't onboard anyone or issue contracts, including China, Hong Kong, Pakistan, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Ukraine, Russia, Iran and Venezuela. Payouts go through Stripe in most countries and through Wise in Brazil, the UAE, Nepal and Turkey.
Contractor status. You're an independent contractor, not an employee, and Mercor doesn't withhold taxes. US contractors file a W-9 and get a 1099-NEC through Stripe if they earn more than $600 in a year. Non-US contractors file a W-8BEN.
How to Get Hired at Mercor
- Create an account and profile. Upload a resume and fill in your experience and skills. Mercor's AI reads your resume to match you with roles.
- Take the AI interview. An AI interviewer asks questions based on your resume and the role, records video and audio, and scores you. Most interviews take about 20 minutes. You need a computer with a camera and microphone, and some interviews require screen sharing. There's a free practice interview, and you can retake each official interview up to three times.
- Complete assessments. These are skill tests for a domain or data type. Most allow only one submission, some block copy and paste, and AI tools are not allowed. One assessment can qualify you for several roles.
- Apply or get an Instant Offer. You can apply to listings, but strong interview and assessment results can also get you "Instant Offers" for roles you never applied to. Mercor says it usually takes 2 to 4 weeks to hear whether you've moved forward.
- Do a paid work trial (sometimes). Some projects start with a work trial that takes about 4 to 6 hours. You get only one paid trial ever, and it's paid within 7 to 14 days of review whether or not you're hired.
- Accept the offer and onboard. Sign the terms of work and a confidentiality and invention assignment agreement, submit your tax form, set up Stripe, verify your ID with Persona, and pass a background check if the project needs one. Then install Insightful and log into the project tools.
The AI interview and assessments are unpaid. So is Mercor's "Rubric Academy" bootcamp at the application stage. Applying is free, but you can spend several unpaid hours on a profile, interviews and tests before you know whether there's work for you.
Is it hard to get hired? For many people, yes. A popular post on r/mercor_ai in early October was titled "2 years on mercor, never even got a single project." Your odds are much better if you have a profession or degree that current listings ask for, and if you apply to specific listings instead of waiting for matches.

How Mercor Pays
- Pay period: Saturday 12:00 a.m. to Friday 11:59 p.m. India Standard Time. In the US, that week ends Friday late morning Pacific time, so hours you log Thursday night in the Americas may count toward the next week.
- Payout: Weekly. Payouts for the prior week are processed by the end of Wednesday (Pacific), and most money arrives on Thursday, though Mercor says it can take 2 to 10 days depending on your bank.
- First payout: Stripe holds your first payout for 7 days.
- Methods: Stripe Connect in most countries and Wise where Stripe isn't available. Mercor pays only to bank accounts, not debit cards. Stripe Instant Payouts, where available, cost a fee.
- Referrals: You earn 20% of a referred contractor's earnings until you hit a cap of 4 times their hourly rate. Some Reddit users say they've made thousands from referrals, which is worth remembering when a post tells you to sign up through its link.
Insightful, Screenshots and Other Rules
This is where many Mercor contractors get into trouble.
Insightful time tracking. Hourly work must be tracked in the Insightful desktop app, which takes a few screenshots per hour while the timer runs and records activity signals. Mercor says it can't see your files or apps while the timer is off. Hours not tracked in Insightful aren't paid, and you can't add time manually. Forgotten timers are reviewed case by case, with no guarantee.
Hours can be removed. Mercor says time logged while idle or on unrelated work can be cut after a human reviews your screenshots and activity, and that you'll get an email before payday saying how many hours were removed. You have one week to dispute, and the decision is final. Mercor also says that if it has to remove hours manually, you shouldn't expect to stay on the project. In October 2026, a contractor on r/mercorai_workers said hundreds of dollars were cut from approved, delivered work and that they were talking to a law firm about it.
No VPNs. Since July 17, 2026, Mercor blocks sign-ins through VPNs, proxies and other anonymizing services, including iCloud Private Relay, with no exceptions. One contractor said they were offboarded within minutes after a VPN app turned itself on mid-task.
Limited AI use. You may use tools like ChatGPT to check grammar and lightly polish wording. You may not use them to evaluate model responses, write your justifications or predict what code will do. Contractors report being removed for suspected AI use with no appeal, so write everything yourself.
One person, one account. Account sharing, letting someone else do your work and running multiple accounts can lead to withheld pay and removal.
The 2026 Data Breach
On March 31, 2026, Mercor confirmed it had been affected by a supply chain attack on LiteLLM, an open-source AI library. Poisoned versions of the library were live for about 40 minutes. A hacking group claimed to have taken around 4 terabytes of data, including candidate profiles, personal information, source code and API keys.
Business Insider reported on April 7 that five contractors had filed lawsuits in federal courts in California and Texas. The suits allege that Mercor's security failures exposed Social Security numbers, addresses and interview recordings. TechCrunch reported that Meta paused its work with Mercor and that OpenAI was investigating. Mercor said publicly only that it was "impacted" and was communicating with customers and contractors directly. It didn't describe what data was stolen.
The business has recovered since then. TechCrunch reported in July that Mercor was in talks to raise money at a $20 billion valuation. But if you applied before April 2026, assume your data may have been exposed:
- Freeze your credit with Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. It's free.
- Watch for phishing emails that use your Mercor history or interview details.
- Change any password you reused on your Mercor account.
New applicants still have to hand over a lot: a resume, a recorded video interview, an ID scan and selfie, tax details and sometimes a background check. You can request deletion of your account and data from Mercor's account settings, but Mercor says deleting your account doesn't remove data that companies have already accessed.
What Contractors Say
The good: Professionals with in-demand skills report steady hourly work at rates few other gigs match, on-time weekly pay and helpful project staff. A legal compliance expert posted in October that payments "were done on time" and the staff was responsive. A paid work trial, even if you aren't hired, is also rare in this industry.
The bad: The most common complaints in September and October 2026 were:
- Mass offboardings. Contractors on a large project with thousands of people reported mass removals in late September. One said Mercor's email blamed the project's scope, not their performance.
- Waiting with no work. Long-time applicants with no project, and offers for projects that were already paused, with a weekly cap of zero hours.
- Removed hours after work was approved, as described above.
- Slow support. Some contractors say they waited days for a reply, or never got one about per-task payments.
- Chaotic onboarding on very large projects, with changing rules and confusing instructions.

Common Questions About Mercor
Does Mercor actually pay?
Yes. Hourly contractors are paid weekly through Stripe or Wise for hours approved in Insightful. Complaints are about how many hours get approved and about delays on some per-task work, not about Mercor failing to pay at all.
Is the Mercor AI interview legit?
Yes. Mercor says the AI interview is its standard and only screening method. Mercor keeps the video, audio and transcript to evaluate you, and says it doesn't sell them or use them to train outside AI models. You can't get a copy of your recording or transcript.
Can I work for Mercor with a full-time job?
Often, yes. You're a contractor, and each contract sets a weekly hour cap. Check your employer's policy on outside work and on any intellectual property you create, since Mercor's onboarding includes an invention assignment agreement.
Is Mercor safe to give my SSN?
US contractors give their SSN on a W-9 when they accept an offer, which is normal for contract work. Given the 2026 breach, freeze your credit before you onboard and only enter details at work.mercor.com or through its official Stripe and Persona flows.
Is Mercor Worth It?
If you have a profession or advanced degree that Mercor's listings are asking for, it's one of the best-paying AI training platforms, and it's worth applying. Do the free practice interview first, take your time on assessments since you usually get one shot, and choose hourly contracts over per-task ones when you can.
If you're a generalist without a specialty, expect a long wait and be careful with your time: the interview and assessments are unpaid, and many people never get an offer. Either way, treat it as contract income that can stop any week, follow the Insightful and VPN rules exactly, and apply to other platforms too.
