Alignerr Review: Is It Legit, and Does It Actually Pay?

Is Alignerr legit? What the Labelbox-run AI training platform pays, how to get in, why ID checks fail outside the US, how pay and Hubstaff tracking work, and the unpaid-work complaints filling its subreddit.

Some links below are from partners who may pay us if you sign up or buy something. This is how we earn revenue. It doesn't change our recommendations, but it does keep the site running.

Alignerr advertises "$80/hr average pay," says it hires 1,000+ people a week, and lists thousands of remote AI training jobs at up to $150 an hour. Its subreddit tells a different story. Several of the most upvoted posts in September 2026 were titled "ALIGNERR IS NOT LEGIT" and "Not Paid a Single penny for 65 Hours of Work."

So which is it? This review covers who runs Alignerr, what the jobs really pay, how to get in, and the payment and account problems contractors report. We checked Alignerr's homepage, FAQ, onboarding page, community rules and job listings on October 5, 2026, along with its Better Business Bureau profile and recent Reddit posts. Rates and policies change, so check the job listing before you start.

Is Alignerr Legit?

Yes, in the sense that it's a real platform run by a real company that pays many contractors. Alignerr is "powered by Labelbox," a San Francisco company whose data labeling platform AI teams use to build and evaluate models. Contractors do their work inside Labelbox's tools, and Alignerr says it has more than 100,000 experts and pays out $1 million a week.

It's also the platform with the most serious payment complaints of the big AI training sites we've reviewed. Its Better Business Bureau profile shows an F rating and eight complaints closed in the past three years. Recent Reddit posts describe projects ending with work still unpaid, accounts deactivated without explanation, and support that doesn't reply. Some people clearly get paid on time. Others say they were removed right before payday. Go in knowing both are common.

How Much Does Alignerr Pay?

Alignerr says rates vary by project and skill set and are always listed in the job description before you start. Its homepage claims $80/hour as "average pay," but most open listings pay far less. On October 5, 2026:

  • General AI training roles (AI Training Specialist, AI Data Quality Analyst, AI Policy & Ethics Analyst, Robotics Technician): $40 to $120/hour, and several say no experience is needed
  • Business Analyst: $40 to $80/hour
  • Specialist roles (Finance & Accounting, Computer Vision & ML): up to $150/hour
  • Legal & Compliance Expert: up to $120/hour
  • Language and audio transcription roles (Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Turkish, Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi, Catalan and more): $15 to $35/hour
  • Hindi, Simplified Chinese and Spanish transcription: $10 to $35/hour
  • Central American Spanish healthcare call review: $15 to $20/hour

Alignerr listed 5,678 jobs that day, but many are near-copies of the same transcription role aimed at speakers in different cities. The number of listings says little about how much work there is.

How you're paid matters as much as the rate. Some projects are hourly and tracked with Hubstaff. Others pay per task, or per "media hour" of finished transcription rather than for the time you spend. One transcriber on r/alignerr calculated they were earning under $10/hour because a 20-second clip took more than five minutes to finish. Another contributor said they earned about $14/hour after being promoted to reviewer on a labeling project. Rates also aren't fixed: in September 2026, a widely upvoted post accused Alignerr of cutting rates for contributors in India, Egypt and other non-US regions.

Who Can Join Alignerr?

Alignerr says it wants people with the skills for the jobs they apply to, whether that's domain expertise, coding ability or "sharp analytical thinking." Many contributors are undergrads, graduates or advanced degree holders, but generalists are welcome, and clear written English is required. Students can apply. You're an independent contractor, there are no minimum hours, and Alignerr says many people work 20 to 25 hours a week.

The ID problem. Alignerr says it welcomes applicants from around the world, and visa holders can join if their visa allows contract work (no sponsorship). But its FAQ also says identity verification accepts only US driver's licenses, US state IDs, US work permits and US permanent residence cards. In September and October, contributors in the UK and South Korea reported getting stuck at the ID step, one with the message "Unable to verify identities in this country." If you don't have a US-issued ID, check that you can pass verification before you spend hours on applications.

Phone verification is also limited to US and Canadian numbers. Applicants elsewhere skip that step, and Alignerr says that's expected.

How to Join Alignerr

  1. Sign in with Google at alignerr.com and upload your resume. The platform fills in your profile in about 30 seconds. Check your location, since it affects which jobs and payment options you see.
  2. Set your skill and domain preferences, and choose whether to opt in to Alignerr Connect, which offers extra jobs working directly with AI labs.
  3. Apply to jobs that match your skills. Each listing shows the requirements and pay.
  4. Verify your phone and identity through Persona.
  5. Complete a Zara AI interview or domain assessment if the job requires one.
  6. Sign your contract and set up payouts through Stripe Connect or PayPal, depending on your country. The FAQ also mentions Deel for some contributors who pass an assessment.
  7. Join onboarding, including Alignerr's Discord community and an introduction to the Labelbox platform. Every project then starts with a calibration phase where reviewers check sample work.

Alignerr doesn't say whether interviews, assessments or calibration are paid, and contributors on Reddit regularly ask. Assume screening is unpaid unless the project terms say otherwise. Getting matched to a project depends on demand, your skills, your assessment results and your past performance, and there's no set timeline.

Does Alignerr Actually Pay?

Usually, but this is where most complaints come from.

What Alignerr says. One FAQ answer says "All Alignerrs are paid for completed work – even if it's graded to be low quality," with exceptions only for "the most extreme cases of fraud." Other answers on the same page are narrower. They say all accepted work will be paid, but that work found to be "fraudulent, incomplete, or rejected during review" will not be. If your account is deactivated after failing a verification check, payment is held while Alignerr manually reviews your work.

Schedule and methods. Alignerr doesn't publish a payout schedule. Contributors describe weekly payments near the end of the week, paid through Stripe Connect or PayPal. Check payout options for your country early: one contributor in India said their region was locked to Stripe payouts they couldn't set up as an individual, and support said the setting was fixed by region.

What contributors report. In September 2026 alone, r/alignerr included posts about:

  • 65 hours of coding work unpaid after a project was "downsized" and the contributor's access was removed
  • An account deactivated after weeks on a code project, with "thousands of dollars" of completed work unpaid
  • About 75 hours of pay pending for four months on one project
  • A $1,000-per-task project where submissions sat unreviewed while admins went quiet in Discord
  • An account removed right after Persona verification, with no way to reach the appeal form

Some of these may be resolved later, and unhappy contractors post more than happy ones. But the pattern is consistent, and other independent reviewers have reported the same thing: payment problems usually follow a sudden removal or deactivation.

Hubstaff, Quality Scores and Account Bans

Hubstaff time tracking. Some projects require Hubstaff, a free time tracker that takes periodic screenshots and records the websites and apps you use while it runs. On those projects, the Labelbox editor won't let you work unless the timer is running.

Quality scores. Labelbox tracks the quality and speed of your work and combines them into a composite score, and it also monitors how often your work needs rework. Higher scores get you picked for more projects.

Reasons for removal. Alignerr says accounts can be suspended for policy violations, low-quality work or inactivity. Its community rules add that it keeps "logs of screen activity," and that gaming assessments, calibration or the timer, or running duplicate accounts, means an immediate ban. Discussing project details publicly breaks your NDA and can lead to removal and "potential legal consequences."

Support. Help is through support@alignerr.com or the Intercom chat in the Alignerr app. Alignerr says escalations are handled manually and can take extra time. Contributors say project leads often can't help with pay and send them to support, which can be slow.

The Good Side

Alignerr has real strengths, and they show up in Reddit posts too:

  • Interesting specialist work. One machine learning contributor wrote that Alignerr has the best ML projects of any platform they'd used, and was invited to a pilot program based on past performance.
  • Room to move up. A labeler said they were promoted to reviewer in their first week and praised a "great" community.
  • It does pay many people. A contributor who had been rejected by Mercor for a year posted about getting paid for their first transcription project on Alignerr about 10 days after onboarding.
  • Broad job range. There are more listings than on most platforms, across coding, STEM, audio, language, robotics and general evaluation, with roles that don't require experience.

Common Questions About Alignerr

How often does Alignerr pay?

Alignerr doesn't publish a schedule. Contributors describe weekly payouts near the end of the week through Stripe Connect or PayPal. If a payment is missing, contact support by email or Intercom.

How much does Alignerr pay per hour?

It depends on the job. Listings in October 2026 ranged from $10 to $35/hour for transcription to $40 to $120/hour for general AI training roles and up to $150/hour for specialists. Per-task and per-media-hour projects can work out much lower than the listed rate.

Is Alignerr safe?

Alignerr uses Persona for ID verification and Stripe or PayPal for payouts, which are standard. The main risks are fake recruiters using Alignerr's name and losing pay if your account is removed. Use only alignerr.com and app.alignerr.com, keep records of the work you submit, and never pay for access to a project.

Can I work for Alignerr outside the US?

In principle, yes. Alignerr says it welcomes applicants worldwide and has many non-US language jobs. In practice, its FAQ says ID verification accepts only US-issued documents, and some non-US applicants report being blocked at that step.

Is Alignerr Worth It?

Alignerr is worth a try if you have a US-issued ID and a skill its listings pay well for, such as coding, machine learning, finance or law. Hourly projects tracked with Hubstaff are the safest choice. Be careful with per-task and per-media-hour projects, and with any project where your submitted work sits unreviewed for long.

Protect yourself: screenshot each project's pay terms, keep a log of tasks and hours, and don't let a large balance build up on a project that hasn't paid yet. If you need dependable income, Alignerr shouldn't be your only platform.
