Instacart pays shoppers to pick grocery orders and deliver them, on their own schedule. It's one of the most popular delivery gigs, but Instacart doesn't publish an average hourly rate, so "how much do Instacart shoppers make" is harder to answer than it looks.

This guide explains how Instacart pay works, what independent data shows shoppers earn per hour and per batch, the minimum pay rules in New York City, Seattle and California, and what's left after costs and taxes. Instacart figures come from its own shopper pages and help center, checked on October 7, 2026, and we label third-party data as such.

How Much Do Instacart Shoppers Make Per Hour?

Independent data puts typical full-service shopper pay at about $12 to $16 per hour before expenses:

  • $12.51 per hour (median), including promotions, according to Gridwise, a driver earnings app that tracked 20,538 Instacart shoppers in 2025. The average was $13.30, the top 25% made at least $15.40 an hour and the top 10% made $19.04.
  • $15.60 per hour in the typical US metro in 2026, according to Solo, an earnings-tracking app that studied 30 metros. That's up about 5% from $14.95 in 2025. Pay was highest in the San Francisco Bay Area at $20.34 an hour and lowest in Houston at $12.83.

Both figures are gross pay before gas, car costs and taxes, and both count time spent on batches rather than time waiting for one.

Most shoppers work part-time. Instacart says the average shopper works fewer than 10 hours a week, and 70% have other sources of income.

How Much Do Instacart Shoppers Make Per Batch?

A "batch" is one or more orders you accept together, up to four. Gridwise's 2025 data shows a median of $12.79 per batch (average $13.63), and shoppers completed just under one batch per hour. Tips made up about 42% of pay, with a median tip of $5.39 per batch.

How Instacart Pay Works

Instacart's formula is simple: batch pay + promotions + tips = total earnings.

Batch pay

Instacart says batch pay "reflects the total expected effort it takes to complete a batch," including the drive to the store and the customer, the number and weight of items, and the expected time to shop. Before you accept, you see the store, the distance, the number of items, the batch pay and the expected tip.

A few rules work in your favor:

  • Upfront pay never goes down if you complete the batch as accepted, and it can go up if the customer adds items.
  • Everyone sees the same pay for the same batch at the same time.
  • You're never penalized for declining a batch.
  • Heavy pay adds at least $2 when items weighing 8 pounds or more total 50 pounds or more.
  • Boosts add extra pay when there aren't enough shoppers to meet demand.

Instacart doesn't publish a national minimum batch pay. In 2019 it said minimum batch pay ranged from $7 to $10 for full-service batches, and in 2023 news reports said it had cut the minimum to $4.

Tips

Instacart says shoppers keep 100% of tips. Customers can increase a tip for up to 14 days after delivery, but they can't lower it once two hours have passed. That limits "tip baiting," where a customer promises a big tip and then removes it. If a customer zeroes out a tip without reporting a problem, Instacart covers up to $10 of the removed tip.

Promotions and peak times

Instacart runs promotions when demand is high, and some are offered to individual shoppers. In many areas, a peak earnings chart shows which hours of the week pay more per batch, so you can plan your schedule.

Cart Star

Instacart's rewards program, Cart Star, gives you 10 points for each completed order plus bonus points on some bigger batches. Points reset each quarter:

  • Gold Cart: 200 points
  • Platinum Cart: 1,000 points
  • Diamond Cart: 3,000 points

Every tier also needs a customer rating of 4.7 or higher and a good enough quality score. The main perk is priority access to batches, with Diamond shoppers seeing batches first. Other rewards include gas cash back, oil change discounts, discounted backup child care and a free Instacart+ membership for Diamond.

In-store shoppers

Instacart also hires in-store shoppers as hourly employees who pick orders at one store for up to 29 hours a week, with no car needed. Instacart says the hourly wage is set in each offer letter and doesn't publish a figure.

Instacart Minimum Pay by City

A few places set a legal floor on what grocery apps must pay:

  • New York City: grocery apps including Instacart came under the city's delivery worker minimum pay law on January 26, 2026. Since April 1, 2026, the minimum is $22.13 per hour before tips for trip time. Instacart responded by limiting when NYC shoppers can go online, sending batch offers one at a time and adding a weekly bonus for eligible shoppers.
  • Seattle: for 2026, at least $0.47 per minute plus $0.80 per mile, or $5.34 per offer, whichever is greater.
  • California (Prop 22): at least 120% of the local minimum wage for time spent shopping and delivering, plus $0.37 per mile in 2026. At the $16.90 statewide minimum wage, that's $20.28 per hour. Tips are paid on top.

What You Actually Keep After Costs

Full-service shoppers are independent contractors, so Instacart says you pay for your own gas and maintenance, and no taxes are withheld.

Car costs. Driving is your biggest expense. Gridwise found a median of about $2.84 in gross pay per mile, well above the IRS mileage rate, but long drives to the store and back still add up.

Taxes. You owe self-employment tax of 15.3% on most of your profit, plus income tax. Two things lower your bill:

  • The mileage deduction. For 2026, the IRS standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per mile from January through June and 76 cents per mile from July through December, so keep a dated mileage log.
  • No tax on tips. From 2025 through 2028, grocery delivery workers can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from their taxable income.

Instacart says it sends a 1099 tax form if you earn more than $600 in a year, available in the Shopper app. For payments made in 2026, the IRS raised the 1099 threshold to $2,000. All your income is taxable either way.

Getting Paid

  • Shopper Rewards Card: free automatic payouts after every batch, plus 1% to 3% cash back on gas depending on your Cart Star tier.
  • Instant Cashout: cash out to another debit card within minutes of a delivery. Instacart said in 2025 that the fee would be $1.50 per cashout once the Rewards Card is available to you.
  • Weekly direct deposit: free, paid between Wednesday and Friday for the previous Monday to Sunday.

You never pay for groceries with your own money. Instacart gives you a separate payment card loaded with the amount for each batch.

Who Can Shop for Instacart?

Full-service shoppers need to:

  • Be 18 or older and eligible to work in the US
  • Have a bank account
  • Have regular access to a vehicle and a recent smartphone
  • Be able to lift 40 pounds, with or without accommodation
  • Pass a criminal and driving record background check

In-store shoppers don't need a car. You can sign up at shoppers.instacart.com and finish in the Shopper app. No experience is required.

How to Make More Money on Instacart

  1. Use the peak earnings chart to shop during the hours that pay more per batch in your area.
  2. Compare pay to distance and item count before you accept. A short trip with few items can beat a bigger batch that takes twice as long.
  3. Take heavy and multi-order batches when they pay well. Heavy pay and stacked orders can raise your hourly rate.
  4. Build your Cart Star tier with good ratings and quality so you get first pick of batches.
  5. Use the free Rewards Card to avoid cashout fees and get gas cash back.
  6. Track every mile and set aside money for taxes.

Common Questions About Instacart Pay

Is Instacart or DoorDash better?

They pay in similar ranges. Instacart batches usually pay more per order but take longer, since you shop as well as deliver. Many people run both. See our guides to how much DoorDash drivers make and how much Uber Eats pays.

Can you make $1,000 a week with Instacart?

It's possible in a busy, higher-paying market if you shop full-time, but it's well above what most shoppers earn. At Solo's typical rate of $15.60 an hour, $1,000 in gross pay would take about 64 hours of active shopping, before expenses.

How long does it take to get paid?

With the Shopper Rewards Card, pay arrives automatically after each batch. Otherwise, Instant Cashout pays within minutes for a fee, or weekly direct deposit arrives between Wednesday and Friday.

Does Instacart pay for gas?

No, but the IRS mileage deduction offsets it at tax time, and the Shopper Rewards Card gives cash back on gas.

Is Instacart Worth It?

Instacart is a flexible gig with clear upfront pay, protection against tip baiting and no penalty for declining batches. For most shoppers, realistic pay is about $12 to $16 an hour before expenses, with tips making up around 40% of it. It works best as part-time income in a busy area, especially if you shop at peak times and build up your Cart Star tier.
