Uber Eats lets you deliver food by car, scooter, bike or even on foot in some cities, and get paid after every trip. But how much does Uber Eats actually pay? Uber doesn't publish an average hourly rate for US couriers, so the answer takes some digging.

This guide explains how Uber Eats pay works, what independent data shows couriers earn per hour and per delivery, the minimum pay rules in New York City, Seattle and California, and what's left after costs and taxes. Uber figures come from its own courier pages and help center, checked on October 7, 2026, and we label third-party data as such.

How Much Does Uber Eats Pay Per Hour?

Independent data puts typical Uber Eats pay at about $14 to $18 per hour before expenses:

  • $15.03 per hour (median), including promotions, according to Gridwise, a driver earnings app that tracked 101,709 Uber Eats couriers in 2025. The average was higher, at $18.06, because heavy users earn more. Trip pay alone had a median of $14.07 an hour. The top 25% made at least $17.02 an hour from trips, and the top 10% made $20.83.
  • $16.29 per hour of take-home pay across the five largest delivery apps in Seattle in the first half of 2025, according to the city's Office of Labor Standards. Seattle has its own minimum pay law, so this is higher than many cities.

These are gross figures before gas and car costs, and per-hour numbers depend on whether waiting time counts.

How Much Does Uber Eats Pay Per Delivery?

Gridwise's 2025 data shows a median of $8.16 per delivery, with the top 10% of deliveries paying $12 or more. Couriers averaged 1.7 deliveries per hour. Tips made up about 46% of pay, with a median of $3.73 per delivery.

Gridwise also found the average Uber Eats courier made about $198 a week over 11.5 hours, which shows how many people deliver part-time.

How Uber Eats Pay Works

Uber says your earnings come from three things: the base fare, promotions and tips.

Upfront pay

Before you accept a trip, you see how much you'll make, along with the pickup and drop-off locations and the estimated time and distance. Uber says fares are based on "the anticipated time and effort for that specific delivery, plus real-time factors in your area." Those factors include the number of pickups and drop-offs, how long similar trips take, the time of day and local demand. Uber doesn't publish per-mile or per-minute rates.

In some markets, Uber guarantees a minimum earnings rate for time spent on trips and automatically pays the difference if you earn less.

Tips

Uber says couriers keep 100% of tips. Customers can tip when they order and add more after delivery. Since October 2025, the total shown on a trip request is guaranteed: it's the minimum you'll receive, even if the customer later lowers the tip, with exceptions such as canceled trips.

Many couriers on Reddit suspect that a large upfront tip leads Uber to offer a lower base fare. Uber hasn't confirmed or explained this, so treat it as a courier theory rather than a fact.

Promotions

  • Quests pay a bonus for completing a set number of trips in a set time. Opt in from the Discover tab in the app.
  • Boost+ adds extra pay to every delivery started and completed in a certain area.
  • Surge adds a flat amount on top of your fare during busy times, and it stacks with Quests and Boost+.

Uber Eats Pro

Uber Eats Pro has four levels: Green, Gold, Platinum and Diamond. Your status depends on your acceptance rate, on-time rate, cancellation rate, satisfaction rating and monthly points. Uber's June 2026 update lists 15 points for Gold, 50 for Platinum and 400 or 600 for Diamond depending on the city, but thresholds vary, so check the app.

Higher levels get Preferred Deliveries, which means priority access to higher-paying trips, plus perks like gas discounts, free roadside assistance from Gold up, a Costco membership for new members at Platinum and Diamond, and discounts on TurboTax.

Uber Eats Minimum Pay by City

A few places set a legal floor on what delivery apps must pay:

  • New York City: at least $22.13 per hour before tips for trip time, effective April 1, 2026. Under the city's alternative method, apps can instead pay that rate divided by 60% for trip time only, which works out to about $36.88 per hour of trip time. Uber's own NYC page still listed the 2025 rates when we checked, but the city's figure is the one that applies.
  • Seattle: for 2026, at least $0.47 per minute plus $0.80 per mile of engaged time, or $5.34 per offer, whichever is greater.
  • California (Prop 22): at least 120% of the local minimum wage for engaged time, plus $0.37 per engaged mile in 2026. At the $16.90 statewide minimum wage, that's $20.28 per hour. Tips are paid on top.

Minnesota's minimum pay law covers rideshare trips only, not Uber Eats deliveries.

What You Actually Keep After Costs

Uber Eats couriers are independent contractors, so expenses and taxes come out of your earnings.

Vehicle costs. If you deliver by car, gas, maintenance and depreciation are your biggest costs. Delivering by bike or e-bike, where Uber allows it, avoids most of them. Uber's Pro Card gives 2% to 6% cash back on gas depending on your level.

Taxes. Uber doesn't withhold taxes, and you owe self-employment tax of 15.3% on most of your profit, plus income tax. Two things lower your bill:

  • The mileage deduction. For 2026, the IRS standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per mile from January through June and 76 cents per mile from July through December. Uber's tax summary shows your online miles, but keep your own log of business miles.
  • No tax on tips. From 2025 through 2028, delivery workers can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from their taxable income. Uber suggests opting in to receive a 1099 even if you're under the threshold, to help document your tips.

For tax year 2025, Uber sent a 1099-K to couriers with $20,000 or more in trip earnings and 200 trips, and a 1099-NEC for $600 or more in other payments like promotions. For payments made in 2026, the IRS raised the 1099-NEC threshold to $2,000. All your income is taxable either way.

Getting Paid

  • Weekly pay: deposited automatically, usually by Thursday, for the week that ended Monday at 4 a.m.
  • Instant Pay: cash out up to six times a day for $1.25 per cash-out to a personal debit card. Many older articles still say $0.85, but Uber listed $1.25 when we checked.
  • Uber Pro Card: a free debit card that receives your earnings automatically after every trip, with no Instant Pay fee.

What Couriers Say on Reddit

We read through recent posts in r/UberEATS to see how real earnings compare. These are individual reports, not data:

  • Most offers are small, so couriers screen by pay per mile. One courier says about 90% of their offers pay $10 to $15, and offers over $20 usually mean a drive of 20 miles or more. Many set a minimum of $1 to $2 per mile.
  • Results swing wildly by market. A Miami courier who only takes $25+ orders reports $250 to $300 for a six-hour evening, while a Salt Lake City courier reported averaging about $4 an hour on a slow Saturday.
  • Waiting time matters. A Canadian courier who tracked six months of earnings found their pay per online hour was about a third lower than their pay per active hour.
  • Car costs can wipe out low offers. Couriers regularly post long multi-stop offers that would lose money once you count the IRS mileage rate.
  • Quests can be hard to hit. One courier's weekend Quest required 100 deliveries for a $652 bonus.

Who Can Deliver for Uber Eats?

  • By bike or on foot: 18 or older, with a government ID and Social Security number. Walking is available in some cities.
  • By scooter: 19 or older, with a scooter under 50cc, a driver's license, registration and insurance.
  • By car: 19 or older (21 in California and New York), with a two- or four-door car, a driver's license and insurance.
  • Everyone: a background check and, in many markets, proof of residency.

You can apply at uber.com/deliver or in the Uber Driver app. Uber says activation can take anywhere from a few minutes to 48 hours, though its help center says background checks typically take three to five business days.

How to Make More Money on Uber Eats

  1. Deliver at peak meal times and in busy areas, and watch the app's heatmap for Surge.
  2. Judge offers by pay per mile and per minute. A short $8 trip can beat a long $15 one.
  3. Plan around Quests and Boost+, but don't chase a Quest with offers that lose money.
  4. Keep your ratings and acceptance rate high enough to reach Gold, which unlocks Preferred Deliveries.
  5. Use the Pro Card to avoid Instant Pay fees and get gas cash back.
  6. Run a second app like DoorDash or Instacart to cut down on waiting time, and track every mile for taxes.

Common Questions About Uber Eats Pay

Is Uber Eats or DoorDash better?

It depends on your market. Gridwise's data shows Uber Eats couriers complete slightly more deliveries per hour than DoorDash drivers (1.70 vs 1.51). Many couriers run both apps and take the better offer. See our guide to how much DoorDash drivers make.

Does Uber Eats pay for gas?

No. Gas is your expense, though the IRS mileage deduction offsets it at tax time if you track your miles, and the Uber Pro Card gives cash back on gas.

How often does Uber Eats pay?

Weekly by default, usually by Thursday. With Instant Pay or the Uber Pro Card, you can get paid the same day.

Can you make $1,000 a week with Uber Eats?

It's possible in a busy market if you deliver full-time at peak hours, but the average courier earns far less. Gridwise's data shows a median of about $15 an hour, so $1,000 in gross pay would take roughly 65 hours at that rate, before expenses.

Is Uber Eats Worth It?

Uber Eats is one of the most flexible gigs available, with no minimum hours, multiple ways to deliver and same-day pay. For most couriers, realistic pay is about $14 to $18 an hour before expenses, with tips making up close to half. It works best as side income in a busy area, especially if you deliver by bike or combine it with another app.
