A good insulated bag is the cheapest upgrade a delivery driver can buy. It keeps food hot, keeps your car clean, gets you access to pizza and catering orders, and looks professional when a customer is watching on a doorbell camera. But you don't have to buy the official DoorDash bag, and the free one DoorDash mails you is the bag drivers complain about most.
This guide covers what DoorDash, Uber Eats, Grubhub and Instacart actually require, how to get a free bag, how the DoorDash pizza and catering bag programs work, and the bags we'd buy for each job. Platform rules and official store prices were checked on October 12, 2026. Amazon prices change often, so treat the ones here as a snapshot from the same day.

Do You Need a Bag for DoorDash?
Not to sign up. DoorDash's Dasher requirements don't list a bag. But in practice you'll want one, and some orders require it:
- Merchants can require a hot bag. DoorDash's food safety article says merchants "may require all Dashers to have an insulated hot bag" and that "You may use any hot bag of your choice."
- Branded gear is optional. The official DoorDash Store says any DoorDash gear you buy "is strictly optional and is not required to dash."
- Pizza and catering orders check your bag. DoorDash asks for a photo of a pizza or catering bag before it prioritizes you for those orders (more on both below).
- DoorDash sends a free bag after your first delivery. Its gear guide says "DoorDash sends you an insulated tote bag after you complete your first DoorDash delivery." The welcome kit also includes a Red Card and a getting-started manual and arrives in 3 to 7 business days.
The other apps work the same way: any insulated bag is accepted, and the bag helps you get more orders.
- Uber Eats says a bag is optional and "Any insulated bag works," but whether you have one affects which trips you're offered. You can register pizza, standard and large bags in the Driver app (more below).
- Grubhub says you can start "with any insulated delivery bag" and mails a free bag and a Driver Card after your first delivery. Grubhub expects you to bring your own bag until then.
- Instacart tells shoppers to "use insulated bags for hot or cold items." It doesn't sell or mail bags, so you buy your own.
The Free DoorDash Bag vs Buying Your Own
The free welcome bag matches the $9.50 DoorDash Insulated Tote in the official store: a 13 x 15 x 9.5-inch zip-top tote with a foil lining. It's fine for one or two meals. The problem is durability. On r/doordash_drivers, the most common complaint is the zipper: one driver said theirs "lasted about three weeks before the zipper broke." Drivers also call it too small for big orders.
That's why most experienced Dashers end up buying a bigger bag on Amazon or at Walmart, and keeping the free tote as a second bag for drinks or small orders. Grubhub's free vented bag gets far better reviews from drivers than DoorDash's, and some multi-app drivers use it on every app.

We picked bags with at least a 4.5-star average on Amazon and, in nearly every case, more than 1,000 ratings, then checked their sizes against what DoorDash and Uber Eats ask for. Most delivery bags pool their ratings across colors and sizes, so the counts below cover the whole listing.
Best Overall: Bodaon Insulated Food Delivery Bag, XXXL
The Bodaon XXXL is the bag you'll see in the most delivery drivers' cars, and it's the best value for an everyday hot bag. It measures 23 x 15 x 14 inches on the outside (79 liters), so it swallows several restaurant orders, a stack of pizza boxes or a full grocery run. It has a two-way zipper on top, two pairs of handles and a foil lining that wipes clean, and it folds flat when you don't need it.
Bodaon Insulated Food Delivery Bag, XXXLA huge 23 x 15 x 14-inch zip-top hot bag. About $20, 4.5 stars from nearly 12,000 ratings.Check price on Amazon
It was the #1 seller in Amazon's pizza delivery bag category when we checked, with 4.5 stars from nearly 12,000 ratings. The trade-offs are the same as most cheap bags: it's soft-sided with no rigid bottom, has no shoulder strap, and some buyers report seams leaking or zippers failing after a few months of daily use. At about $20 it's easy to replace, and it's still a big step up from the free tote.
Who it's for: car drivers on any app who want one big bag that handles almost every order. For a single burrito, a bag this size loses heat faster, so pair it with a smaller bag.
If you want the same size in tougher fabric, the Himal Outdoors XXXL has a 600D Oxford shell, a shoulder strap and a clear label pocket for about $34.
Best Budget: VENO Insulated Cooler Bag 2-Pack
The VENO 2-pack gets you two zip-top insulated bags for about $19, which is less than one DoorDash Store delivery bag. Each bag is 15.7 x 12.6 x 8.7 inches, close to the 15 to 16-inch width DoorDash says "handles most restaurant orders." It's rated to carry 45 pounds and has 4.7 stars from more than 14,000 ratings, the best score of any bag we looked at.
VENO Insulated Cooler Bag, 2-PackTwo everyday-size zip-top bags for about $19, so you can keep hot and cold orders apart. 4.7 stars from 14,000+ ratings.Check price on Amazon
Two bags is the real advantage. You can keep hot food in one and drinks or cold items in the other, or use one bag per order when you stack deliveries so you never hand over the wrong food. A couple of Dashers on Reddit recommend VENO bags because they're shaped more like a tote than DoorDash's bag, so wide fast-food bags with drinks fit better. They won't hold a pizza box flat, and the non-woven fabric is less tough than Oxford fabric.
Best Pizza Bag: musbus Insulated Pizza Bag, 20 x 20 Inch
DoorDash's pizza program accepts any insulated pizza bag that's about 18 x 18 x 5 inches, and the musbus 20 x 20 pizza bag clears that with room to spare. It's 20 x 20 x 6 inches inside, the listing says it fits three 18-inch pizza boxes (buyers report fitting four), and it has triple-layer insulation, two zippers and a shoulder strap. It costs about $18 and has 4.6 stars from more than 2,700 ratings.
musbus Insulated Pizza Bag, 20 x 20 InchA 20 x 20 x 6-inch pizza bag that fits three 18-inch boxes and meets DoorDash's pizza bag size. About $18.Check price on Amazon
Pizza bags also make good all-purpose bags. Drivers stand them on end and drop in big fast-food bags, which keeps them upright. The main complaint is moisture: like most sealed pizza bags, it can trap steam and make boxes soggy, so leave the zipper cracked on longer drives. Some reviews also mention loose stitching. If you want a deeper bag, the Bodaon 20 x 20 x 8 pizza bag holds four 18-inch boxes for about the same price.
Best Catering Bag: Herculean Premium Insulated Delivery Bag
Catering orders are big, and the cheap bags above are the ones whose zippers and straps fail first under a full load. The Herculean Premium bag is built for that job. It's 23 x 14 x 15 inches, which meets DoorDash's catering bag size of at least 22 x 14 x 13 inches and fits full-size steam table pans. It has a heavy 1680D polyester shell, half-inch foam, a removable divider and a padded shoulder strap, and it's the only bag on this list with a name-brand YKK zipper.
Herculean Premium Insulated Delivery BagA heavy-duty 23 x 14 x 15-inch catering bag with a YKK zipper and a divider. Meets DoorDash's catering bag size.Check price on Amazon
At about $63 it costs more than DoorDash's own $39.95 catering bag, and it has slightly fewer than 900 ratings (4.6 stars). A full-time gig worker in the reviews praised the zipper but said to expect to replace the straps eventually, and it's heavy when full. If you only take the occasional catering order, the DERABY Commercial Grade XXXL is a cheaper option at about $50 with a similar footprint.
Best for Bikes and E-Bikes: Ytonet Food Delivery Backpack
If you deliver by bike, e-bike or scooter, you need a backpack, not a tote. The Ytonet Food Delivery Backpack is 15.5 x 14.5 x 15.5 inches with a 4-inch expandable layer (60 liters in total). It has a 600D Oxford shell, a back support plate, interior panels that split it into two compartments, a chest buckle, reflective strips, and a detachable holder for three cups. It costs about $30 and has 4.6 stars from just over 1,000 ratings.
Ytonet Food Delivery BackpackAn expandable 60-liter delivery backpack with a chest strap, reflective strips and a 3-cup holder. About $30.Check price on Amazon
It weighs close to 3 pounds empty, and some buyers say there isn't room for drinks alongside a big order. That's still far cheaper than DoorDash's $77.80 Ultimate Bike Bag. Customers do notice when bike and walking couriers show up without an insulated bag, so this is worth buying before your first shift.
Best for Instacart and Grocery Orders: Creative Green Life Jumbo Cooler Bag
Grocery orders need a different bag. Frozen food and ice cream need to stay cold, and a sealed cooler bag with ice packs does that much better than a hot bag. The Creative Green Life Jumbo Insulated Cooler Bag is 21 x 17 x 8 inches (10 gallons), with thick foam, a leak-resistant liner and heat-welded seams. The maker says it keeps ice frozen for 8 or more hours when zipped. It's also machine washable, which matters when a carton of milk leaks.
Creative Green Life Jumbo Insulated Cooler BagA 10-gallon, machine-washable cooler tote for frozen and cold grocery items. About $30, 4.6 stars from 7,000+ ratings.Check price on Amazon
It costs about $30 and has 4.6 stars from more than 7,000 ratings. It's a good fit for Instacart, DoorDash Shop & Deliver and Shipt. DoorDash tells Shop & Deliver Dashers to "use insulated bags for fresh and frozen items" and to pick frozen items last. If you'd rather have a name brand, the Rachael Ray Jumbo ChillOut Thermal Tote is a similar 10-gallon tote for about $35, sold by Amazon.
Add a set of slim reusable ice packs, like the Cool Coolers XL 4-pack (about $10), and keep them in your home freezer between shifts.
Best Drink Carrier: Rubbermaid Commercial Deluxe Carry Caddy
Spilled drinks are one of the fastest ways to lose a tip. The Rubbermaid Commercial Carry Caddy is a rigid plastic carrier with a center handle that holds up to eight 32-ounce cups. It's the top seller in Amazon's take-out cup carrier category, with 4.6 stars from more than 17,000 ratings, and it costs about $17.
Rubbermaid Commercial Deluxe Carry CaddyA rigid carrier for up to eight 32-ounce cups that sits flat on a seat or in a trunk. About $17.Check price on Amazon
It isn't insulated, and small cups can slide around, so stuff a few napkins in the gaps. It's too big for most hot bags, so it rides on the seat or floor next to them. Drivers on Reddit also like Michael's 6-cup craft caddy, which fits inside DoorDash's free tote, and $3 drink carriers from Dollar Tree.
Keep Bags From Sliding Around
A full hot bag tips over on the first sharp turn. A trunk organizer with dividers holds bags upright and keeps them from sliding. The TRUNKCRATEPRO Large Trunk Organizer (about $36, 4.7 stars from more than 26,000 ratings) has non-slip straps and folds down to half its length, so it also fits on a back seat. DoorDash's food safety article also asks Dashers to lay food flat and secure the bag in the vehicle.
How the DoorDash Pizza Bag Program Works
The DoorDash pizza program is the main reason drivers search for a "DoorDash pizza bag." Here's how it works, according to DoorDash's pizza bag FAQ:
- Verifying a pizza bag gets you priority for pizza offers. "When you verify that you dash with a pizza bag, you'll automatically get prioritized to receive pizza offers."
- Any brand works. The bag must be "insulated and a standard size (usually around 18 inches wide, 18 inches long, and 5 inches deep)." DoorDash sells one, "Or, use your own."
- You verify with a photo. In the Dasher app, go to Account Settings, then Manage, and take a photo of the bag. Some pizza restaurants also ask for a bag photo inside the store during a dash.
- Skipping the bag can cost you pizza orders. If you say you don't have your bag, you can finish that order. But if you accept another pizza order without it, you won't be able to deliver pizza orders after that one until you verify again.
The DoorDash Store sells a lightweight 19 x 19 x 6-inch pizza bag for $11 and a heavier one for $32.75, with free shipping. The most common tip on Reddit is to skip buying one and ask a Pizza Hut, Papa John's or Little Caesars manager for a free DoorDash pizza bag, since many stores get them to hand out. Results vary by store; some managers hand out several and others say no.
Drivers disagree about whether verifying is worth it. Some get pizza orders almost every day, while others say the extra offers were mostly low-paying. DoorDash's photo check is also known to be flaky, rejecting real bags against busy backgrounds. Photograph the bag on a plain surface, open, with a pizza box next to it for scale.
Do You Need a Catering Bag for DoorDash?
DoorDash's catering bag standard is an insulated bag "at least 22" W x 14" L x 13" D." In the US, access to large catering orders comes through Dasher Rewards. DoorDash's current Dasher Rewards FAQ says you can be prioritized for catering orders and that "A catering bag is no longer required for this reward." However, its equipment verification article still flags some orders as needing a catering bag, with a photo check. Catering trays are also too big for an everyday bag, so a catering bag is worth having if you take these orders.
Some extras for catering:
- Setup pay: Orders that need light setup (laying out trays and utensils) show a $3 Setup Extra Pay, and you take a photo of the setup.
- Catering Claim Ahead: an invite-only program for some Platinum Dashers that lets you claim catering offers up to 7 days ahead. It's free, and DoorDash warns "You should never pay to join." Ignore texts offering a free catering bag or paid access.
DoorDash's own catering bag is $39.95 in the DoorDash Store (21.5 x 13.75 x 13.75 inches). The Herculean bag above is a sturdier third-party option that meets the size.
Uber Eats Bags and Insulated Bag Orders
Uber Eats has its own version of the pizza program called insulated bag orders. Some restaurants and stores require couriers to use an insulated bag, and Uber only sends those orders to couriers with an approved bag. There are three types: pizza, standard and large, and Uber notes "Larger orders often have higher tips."
To get approved, take a photo of your bag in the Driver app under Account > Work Hub > Insulated Bags. Uber says "any insulated bag that meets the size requirements will be accepted," and approval usually takes about a day. Couriers on Reddit report that some pizza shops refuse to hand over orders to couriers without a bag.
The official Uber Eats Shop sells a $10 lightweight pizza bag, a $13 large hot bag (20 x 20 x 10 inches, which Uber says can get you approved for standard and pizza orders), and a $19.50 catering bag. All Uber Eats Shop sales are final, while Amazon purchases can usually be returned.
Official Store Prices vs Amazon
Branded bags are cheaper than you might expect, but they're mostly basic non-woven bags. Prices on October 12, 2026:
- DoorDash Store: insulated tote $9.50, Premium Hot Bag $12, pizza bag $11 or $32.75, delivery bag $34.50, catering bag $39.95, Ultimate Bike Bag $77.80, drink carrier $13. Free shipping.
- Uber Eats Shop: pizza bag $10, large hot bag $13, catering bag $19.50, pizza and catering bundle $29.50.
- Grubhub Driver Shop: starter bag $6.60, deluxe bags $19.98 to $29.98, catering bag $30.60, 4-cup carrier $6.65.
A branded bag doesn't get you more orders. Every app says any insulated bag that meets the size is accepted. Buy branded if you like the look, and buy third-party if you want a bigger bag, a tougher zipper or a backpack.
Tips for Using Your Delivery Bag
- Keep hot and cold apart. Food safety rules say hot food should stay at 135°F or above and cold food at 41°F or below (FDA Food Code). One bag can't do both, so put drinks, ice cream and salads in a separate bag.
- Let fried food breathe. Sealed bags trap steam, which turns fries soggy and can make paper bags fall apart. Crack the zipper for fries and burgers on longer trips.
- Match the bag to the order. A single meal in a huge bag cools faster. Carry one small and one large bag.
- Use one bag per order when you stack orders. It's the easiest way to avoid handing a customer the wrong food.
- Carry the bag to the door. Many drivers say customers notice on doorbell cameras and that it helps their ratings.
- Wipe it out after every shift. DoorDash recommends kitchen cleaner, a wipe with water, then letting the bag dry.
- Save your receipts. Bags and other gear you buy for delivery work are a business expense. Our self-employment tax calculator shows how much to set aside.
Common Questions About DoorDash Bags
Does DoorDash give you a free bag?
Yes. DoorDash mails a free insulated tote after you complete your first delivery, as long as you've added your mailing address in the Dasher app. It arrives in 3 to 7 business days with a Red Card and a manual. If it hasn't arrived within 10 business days, contact Dasher support.
Can I use any bag for DoorDash?
Yes. DoorDash says "You may use any hot bag of your choice," and its pizza and catering programs accept any insulated bag that meets the size. Branded DoorDash gear is optional.
How do I get a DoorDash pizza bag?
Buy one from the DoorDash Store ($11 or $32.75), use any insulated pizza bag about 18 x 18 x 5 inches or larger, or ask a Pizza Hut, Papa John's or Little Caesars store if they have free DoorDash pizza bags to give out. Then verify it with a photo in the Dasher app.
Do you need a bag for Uber Eats?
Not to start, but Uber says whether you have one affects which trips you're offered. Registering a bag in Work Hub unlocks insulated bag orders, which include pizza and large orders.
Can I use my DoorDash bag for Uber Eats or Grubhub?
Yes. None of the apps require their own branding, so one good bag works on every app you drive for.
The Bottom Line
If you only buy one bag, get a big everyday hot bag like the Bodaon XXXL, and use DoorDash's free tote as a second bag for drinks and cold items. Add a 20 x 20 pizza bag if you want DoorDash pizza orders, a catering bag if you take large orders, and a cooler bag if you do grocery runs. Together that's well under $100, and it pays for itself in tips and access to more orders.
