DoorDash is the biggest food delivery app in the US, and "how much do DoorDash drivers make" is one of the most common questions new Dashers ask. The honest answer: it depends heavily on where you dash, how you count your hours and how picky you are about offers.

DoorDash doesn't publish an average hourly wage. This guide explains how DoorDash pay actually works, what independent data shows Dashers earn per hour, the minimum pay rules in New York City, Seattle and California, and what's left after car costs and taxes. DoorDash figures come from its own Dasher and Help Center pages, checked on October 7, 2026, and we label third-party data as such.

How Much Do DoorDash Drivers Make Per Hour?

Most independent estimates put DoorDash pay somewhere between $12 and $20 per hour before expenses, depending on how hours are counted:

  • $12.43 per active hour in 2025, according to Gridwise, a driver earnings app that tracks its users' trips. "Active" means only time spent on an order, not time waiting for one. Gridwise says the average Dasher made about $240 a week across all schedules, and that hourly pay barely moved from 2024.
  • $19.98 per hour of time online, including tips, according to Seattle's Office of Labor Standards, which studied delivery app data from January 2024 to June 2025. That figure already subtracts mileage costs. Per engaged hour (time on an order), pay with tips was $36.36, which shows how much waiting time drags the average down.

The gap between those numbers comes down to one thing: active time vs total time. DoorDash counts active time from the moment you accept an offer until you drop it off, including waiting at the restaurant. Time spent waiting for the next offer isn't active time. A Dasher who earns $22 per active hour but spends a third of their shift waiting for orders is really earning closer to $15 an hour.

How DoorDash Pay Works

DoorDash says every delivery pays three things: base pay, promotions and tips.

Base pay

When you earn per offer, base pay ranges from $2 to $10 or more per offer. DoorDash says offers that are longer, take more time or are less popular with Dashers pay more, and that base pay doesn't change based on the customer's tip. The amount you see before you accept is the minimum you'll earn for that offer.

Tips

DoorDash says 100% of tips go to the Dasher. Tips are a big share of your income: Gridwise's 2025 data puts delivery pay at about 44% base pay, 50% tips and 4% bonuses. Gridwise also found that average delivery tips slipped to $4.16 per trip by late 2025, near the lowest level it has recorded.

Promotions

  • Peak Pay adds a fixed amount per delivery during busy times in select zones. Overlapping Peak Pay can stack.
  • Challenges pay a bonus for finishing a set number of deliveries in a set time. DoorDash's own example is an extra $20 for 15 deliveries in a week.
  • Boosts, delivery streaks and distance pay appear in some markets. Check the Promos tab in the app.

Promotions vary by Dasher, location and time of day, so two Dashers in the same city can see different offers.

Earn by Time vs Earn per Offer

In select cities, you can choose Earn by Time, which pays a minimum guaranteed rate for each active hour plus tips. DoorDash doesn't publish a national rate. Its own worked example uses $14 per active hour, so a 30-minute delivery would pay $7 base plus the tip. The rate can change by time and place, but it's locked in once you start a dash.

The catch: on Earn by Time you can only decline or unassign one offer per hour, and DoorDash says tips may be less frequent. DoorDash suggests Earn by Time when orders are quiet, because it gives you a more predictable floor.

Dasher Rewards

After 50 deliveries, you're placed in Silver, Gold or Platinum based on your acceptance rate, completion rate, customer rating and number of deliveries. Higher tiers get priority access to higher-paying orders and can schedule further ahead. DoorDash says the requirements depend on your area, so check the Ratings tab rather than trusting thresholds you see online.

DoorDash Minimum Pay by City

A few places set a legal floor on what delivery apps must pay:

  • New York City: at least $22.13 per hour before tips for time spent on deliveries, effective April 1, 2026. The rate rises each April for inflation, and since January 26, 2026 it also covers grocery apps. In September 2026, the city announced a $131.5 million settlement with DoorDash over unpaid trip and on-call time, with payments to more than 260,000 workers expected to start in late October.
  • Seattle: for 2026, at least $0.47 per minute plus $0.80 per mile for engaged time, or a $5.34 minimum per offer, whichever is greater.
  • California (Prop 22): at least 120% of the local minimum wage for active time, plus $0.37 per mile in 2026. At the $16.90 statewide minimum wage, that's $20.28 per active hour. Tips don't count toward the guarantee, and DoorDash adds any top-up to your pay each week. Dashers who average 15 or more active hours a week can also get a quarterly health care stipend.

Outside these places, there's no minimum per hour, only the guaranteed amount shown on each offer or your zone's Earn by Time rate.

What You Actually Keep After Costs

DoorDash pays you as an independent contractor, so gas, wear and tear and taxes come out of your pocket.

Car costs. AAA estimates that owning and running a new car costs about 77 cents a mile if you drive 15,000 miles a year, including about 13 cents for fuel and 11 cents for maintenance and tires. If your car is older and paid off, fuel and maintenance are the main cash costs, but depreciation still adds up. Gridwise says DoorDash drivers average about $0.92 per mile in earnings, so long, low-paying offers can lose money.

Taxes. DoorDash doesn't withhold taxes. You owe self-employment tax of 15.3% on most of your profit, plus federal and state income tax. Two things help:

  • The mileage deduction. For 2026, the IRS standard mileage rate is 72.5 cents per mile from January through June and 76 cents per mile from July through December. Track every business mile.
  • No tax on tips. From 2025 through 2028, delivery drivers can deduct up to $25,000 of qualified tips from their taxable income. DoorDash says it reports tip income separately from your 1099.

DoorDash's help center says you'll get a 1099-NEC if you earn $600 or more. That was the rule for 2025 earnings. For payments made in 2026, the IRS raised the threshold to $2,000. Either way, all your DoorDash income is taxable, even if you don't get a form.

Getting Paid

  • Weekly direct deposit (free): covers Monday through Sunday of the previous week and usually lands by Wednesday night.
  • Fast Pay: cash out once a day to a debit card for $1.99. You need 25 deliveries and a card that's been on file for at least seven days.
  • DoorDash Crimson: a free deposit account that pays you automatically after every dash with no fee. It replaced the DasherDirect card in 2025.

What Dashers Say on Reddit

We read through recent posts in r/doordash_drivers to see how real earnings compare. These are individual reports, not data, but a few themes came up again and again:

  • The app's hourly number isn't take-home pay. Dashers often report keeping about half to two-thirds of what the app shows after gas, maintenance and taxes. One part-timer posted a month of real numbers: 330 deliveries, $2,756 in pay ($1,701 of it tips), and $20.10 per active hour falling to about $16.50 after setting money aside for taxes and maintenance.
  • Waiting time is the hidden cost. Several Dashers say their pay looks good per active hour but drops sharply when you count time waiting for offers.
  • Your market matters more than your effort. Slow markets report $10 to $13 an hour, while Dashers in busy cities post $25 to $35 an hour on good nights.
  • Being picky works, until it doesn't. Many Dashers only accept offers paying at least $1 to $2 per mile, but declining offers can lower your acceptance rate and tier.
  • Most experienced Dashers run more than one app to cut down on waiting time.

Who Can Drive for DoorDash?

  • Age: at least 18 in most states, 19 in 13 states, and 21 for new applicants in California.
  • Vehicle: any car, scooter or, in select cities, a bike. DoorDash has no car age requirement. If you drive, you need a driver's license, insurance and registration.
  • Background check: a national background check, a driving record check for drivers and a Social Security number trace.
  • Phone: a recent iPhone or Android phone.

How to Make More Money on DoorDash

  1. Dash during peak hours. DoorDash's Dash Report says 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. was the busiest time of day in 2024.
  2. Judge offers by pay per mile and per minute, not just the total. A $9 offer for 3 miles beats a $12 offer for 14 miles.
  3. Watch the Promos tab for Peak Pay and Challenges, and plan your week around them.
  4. Try Earn by Time on slow nights if it's offered in your area, when per-offer pay is thin.
  5. Run a second app like Uber Eats or Instacart to fill the gaps between orders.
  6. Track every mile and set aside money for taxes so a surprise tax bill doesn't wipe out your profit.

Common Questions About DoorDash Pay

How much do DoorDash drivers make a week?

Gridwise says the average Dasher earns about $240 a week, but that includes people who only dash a few hours. A full-time Dasher in a busy market can earn several times that before expenses.

Can you make $1,000 a week with DoorDash?

Some Dashers do, but it usually takes 40 or more hours in a busy market, a high tier and careful offer selection. Dashers on Reddit commonly report keeping about half to two-thirds of their gross pay after gas, wear and taxes, so $1,000 in pay can mean roughly $500 to $700 in your pocket.

Do DoorDash drivers get paid for waiting at restaurants?

In a sense. On Earn by Time, wait time at the restaurant counts as active time. On Earn per Offer, the offer amount is fixed, so a long wait lowers your effective hourly rate. In California, Prop 22 counts restaurant waits as active time for its minimum.

Does DoorDash pay for gas?

No. Gas is your expense, though it's covered by the IRS standard mileage deduction if you track your miles.

Is DoorDash Worth It?

DoorDash is one of the easiest ways to start earning, with no interview, no minimum hours and pay you can cash out the same day. For most people, realistic earnings are about $12 to $20 an hour before expenses, and less after gas and taxes. It works best as flexible side income in a busy market, especially if you dash at peak times and combine it with another app.
