What is Outlier?

Outlier AI is a platform that connects domain experts with projects focused on training and improving AI models. The work involves tasks such as generating training data, evaluating AI performance, and crafting creative prompts for generative models. Outlier emphasizes flexibility, allowing contributors to work remotely and set their own schedules. The platform covers multiple domains, including programming, mathematics, creative writing, and science, providing diverse opportunities for experts to engage in meaningful work. Participants operate as freelancers, typically working in squads led by experienced team leaders who guide them through onboarding and project contributions. The projects aim to build safer, more reliable AI by engaging experts across disciplines to tackle nuanced challenges, such as math reasoning or code evaluation. Outlier compensates contributors weekly, primarily through PayPal or direct deposit, and offers competitive pay depending on the complexity of the task and the domain involved.

Qualifications

To qualify for roles at Outlier AI, candidates typically need deep expertise in the specific domains for which they are applying. While each job posting provides more detailed requirements, the platform generally seeks individuals with a background in relevant fields. Minimum qualifications include high school graduates or individuals with a GED. While the platform values candidates who are juniors or seniors in undergraduate programs, preferred applicants often include graduate students, individuals pursuing or holding a master’s degree, and PhD holders in related fields. In addition to domain expertise, all applicants must possess strong written English skills and clear communication abilities, essential for collaborative work on advanced AI projects. Passion and dedication are also key traits, as the company seeks individuals excited about contributing to the development of next-generation AI systems. The selection process involves a thorough evaluation of resumes to ensure applicants meet the specified qualifications and standards for the roles they pursue.

What users are saying
Powered by AI

Users appreciate the good and trustworthy pay, flexible hours, and the ability to work fully remotely. They mention it's a good opportunity for experts to work from home and value the flexible schedule. Some also note that while the money can be good, it may not always be consistent. However, some users have mixed opinions on the unpaid training for elaborate courses, communication issues within Slack channels and between support and team leaders, and the lack of management. There are also concerns about not receiving invites to start working and earn bonuses, as well as the absence of benefits for contract work.

Make the money while you can

Good hourly rate, and you have the chance to make regular bonuses. Work is fairly easy. The system has a lot of glitches at times. It’s best to make as much as you can because they remove people from projects a lot with no explanation. It can be hard to reach a manager to discuss work issues.

Solid, but inconsistent

This gig has been a lifesaver in this economy. The pay is decent for a remote internet gig ($25-$30/hr), and I've had weeks where I was able to make over $700 in bonuses and $3k-$4k total. However, I've also had weeks where there were no tasks to work on. I've been doing this for five months and have had about a total of one month where I was not given work. So, the work can be inconsistent, but when I'm assigned to a project, I can work all day if I want. Just be aware that the communication is...

Great part time job

Working with this company has been a great part time opportunity. You can work from anywhere which is a huge plus. It's perfect for someone looking for a low-pressure environment to make some extra money. That said, some of the tasks can get a bit repetitive over time, but if you prefer a steady routine, it's not too bad. Overall, I’d recommend it for anyone seeking flexible, remote work with minimal hassle.

Flexible job

Working remotely with this company has been a great experience, offering the flexibility to balance work and studies without one interfering with the other. The pay is competitive, and I appreciate the weekly pay periods, which are always on time. However, one downside is that workers are sometimes removed from projects without any prior notice, which can be frustrating. It would be helpful if management could improve communication and provide clearer reasoning before making such decisions, espe...
