About Onward

Onward runs pre-scheduled door-through-door rides for older adults and patients, booked by health systems, health plans, PACE programs and senior living communities. Companion drivers use their own car, help riders from their door, escort them into appointments or errands and bring them home. Onward advertises a base rate of up to $24 per hour for active time plus 75 cents per mile, tips and bonuses. Its official pages don't say whether drivers are contractors or employees, or when they are paid.

Who can apply

Drivers must be 21 or older with a valid license, at least 1 year of driving experience and a clean record, and must pass a fingerprint background check and a drug and alcohol screening. You need a 4-door, senior-friendly vehicle no more than 10 years old with valid insurance, current CPR and First Aid certification, and about 40 hours of training. Driver cities include Phoenix, Flagstaff, the San Francisco Bay Area, Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego, Sacramento, Fresno, Denver, Boulder, Frederick County (Maryland) and Denton (Texas).
