About NCLA OPI Tester
The National Center for Language Assessment (NCLA) certifies freelance testers for ILR oral proficiency interviews (OPIs) in more than 100 languages. Testers conduct interviews of about 40 minutes by phone and rate them on the ILR scale, or give second ratings on other testers' interviews. NCLA says testers are paid for completing training steps and then paid per test conducted or rated through its testing office, Language Testing International, but it does not publish rates. Payout method and timing are not published.
Who can apply
You need US work authorization (no sponsorship is offered), must pass an OPI in your target language and must complete a 12 to 16 week virtual certification of about 3 to 6 hours a week. Testers need weekday phone availability between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Eastern, from 10 hours a month to 10 hours a week depending on the language, and must commit to at least two years, and a corded landline is preferred. Applications are rolling and prioritized by testing need for each language.
