About Apex Magazine
Apex Magazine publishes dark science fiction, fantasy and horror and pays 8 cents a word for original short stories up to 9,000 words. It reads general submissions only in odd-numbered months, so its next window after October 2026 is November. It also runs a themed monthly flash fiction contest.
Who can apply
Submit during an open month (January, March, May, July, September or November). No reprints or multiple submissions, and no simultaneous submissions to the flash contest.
