Mistplay is one of the best-known apps that pays you to play mobile games. You download games through the app, play them, earn "units" and trade them for gift cards from Amazon, Google Play, PayPal, Xbox and others. Mistplay says 50 million players have joined and that it has given out more than $200 million in rewards since 2016.
So is Mistplay legit? Yes. But it pays far less per hour than most people hope, and several rules decide whether you earn anything at all. This review explains how Mistplay works, what you can realistically earn, and the limits you should know before you start. We read Mistplay's help center, its economy disclosure and its terms of use on October 5, 2026, along with its Trustpilot profile and reviews from players.
Is Mistplay Legit?
Yes. Mistplay is run by Mistplay Inc., a Montreal-based company that has been operating since 2016. It's a loyalty program for mobile games: game developers pay Mistplay to bring them new players, and Mistplay shares part of that with you as units you can redeem for rewards.
Its reputation is mostly positive. Mistplay has a 4.1 out of 5 TrustScore on Trustpilot from about 5,600 reviews, and replies to most negative reviews. Players praise fast gift card delivery and helpful support. The most common complaints are about playtime that doesn't track, rewards slowing down in a game, and a growing focus on in-app purchases.
How Mistplay Works
- Install a new game through Mistplay. Only games you discover and install through the app count.
- Play to earn GXP (game experience points) for every minute of active play.
- Reach checkpoints. Each game has up to 20 checkpoints, and you earn units each time you reach one.
- Redeem units in the Shop for gift cards, PayPal rewards, sweepstakes entries or avatars.
How units are calculated. Each checkpoint pays a base number of units multiplied by the game's "unit multiplier." Mistplay's own example is a base of 20 units times a multiplier of 5, which pays 100 units per checkpoint. Boosted games temporarily raise the multiplier, and some checkpoints have timers that pay extra if you reach them quickly.
Other ways to earn:
- Daily Tasks: Finish a set of tasks each day to open a chest. Mistplay lists the odds as 90% for 100 units, 8% for 150 units and 2% for 500 units.
- Daily play streak: Two minutes of play each day keeps your streak going and earns bonus units.
- Gems: In "Loyalty games," you earn gems for real-money in-app purchases. Gems can be traded for units and raise your Loyalty Status from Bronze to Silver, Gold and Platinum, which boosts your earnings.
- Referrals: Friends who join with your link get 100 extra units on top of the usual 200 welcome units. You get bonus units when they reach checkpoint 5, plus ongoing bonus units from your first five successful referrals.
- Buddy Quests, tournaments, Mistcodes and sweepstakes add smaller or occasional bonuses.
How Much Can You Earn on Mistplay?
Not much per hour, and that's the most important thing to know.
Mistplay doesn't publish a fixed price for gift cards in units. Its economy disclosure says your games, offers and unit earning rates are "unique to your Mistplay account" and differ between users. Third-party reviews and competitors often cite about 1,800 units for a $5 gift card, which works out to roughly a third of a cent per unit. At that rate, a 100-unit checkpoint is worth about 28 cents.
One independent review estimated earnings of about $0.50 to $3 an hour, and said casual players who play 30 to 60 minutes a day often need two to four weeks to reach a $5 gift card. Mistplay itself encourages players to "redeem smaller, faster" with $5 or $10 cards. Treat it as a way to get a little back from games you'd play anyway, not as a side income.
The Limits That Cap Your Earnings
Mistplay's economy disclosure and help center list several caps:
- 2 hours per game per day. After that you stop earning GXP in that game until the next day, though you can switch to another game.
- 20 checkpoints per game. Once you reach the last checkpoint, that game stops paying units.
- $550 a year. You can redeem gift cards and rewards worth at most $550 USD per year.
- Active play only. If your phone sits idle, even in a game with idle features, Mistplay stops tracking your time.
- New games only. Games you've played before, on this phone or an old one, and games already installed on your device by anyone, don't qualify.
- Expiring units. Units can expire if you don't earn any for 180 days. Mistplay says it gives 30 days' notice.
How Mistplay Pays You
Rewards come from the in-app Shop. Options vary by country but include gift cards from Amazon, Google Play, Xbox, PlayStation, GameStop, Starbucks, Walmart and Visa, plus PayPal.
- Speed: Mistplay says orders can stay "Pending" for up to 48 hours while they're processed. In an August 2026 post on r/Mistplay, the Mistplay team said gift cards and PayPal rewards were reaching players within 24 to 48 hours.
- First reward: Expect a one-time account verification step. Mistplay's terms say it may ask for phone validation, a facial scan or precise location before you redeem rewards.
- PayPal: The reward goes to the email you enter. If there's no PayPal account at that email, PayPal emails you instructions, and unclaimed rewards are returned after 30 days. Mistplay can't resend PayPal reward emails, so double-check the address.
- No cash value: Units can't be sold, transferred or swapped for cash outside the Shop.

Why Your Mistplay Rewards Slow Down or Stop
Most frustration with Mistplay comes down to tracking and eligibility. According to Mistplay's help center:
- You played the game before. If you or your device ever installed the game, the reward speed drops or the game won't qualify at all.
- You didn't start within 7 days. Play the game, including any tutorial or sign-up, within a week of installing it.
- The install wasn't attributed. Install only through Mistplay, and avoid switching between Wi-Fi and mobile data during the download. If the game's developer can't confirm the install, checkpoint rewards are reduced.
- Tracking is off. Launch games from Mistplay, not your home screen. Keep "Recording game time" on, allow screen overlay and usage access, and turn off Power Saver, Data Saver and Samsung Game Booster.
- A checkpoint timer ran out. Time-boosted checkpoints drop to the standard reward if you miss the timer. Installing several games at once starts all their timers together, so focus on one game.
- You hit a cap. That means 2 hours a day in that game, or checkpoint 20.
In-app purchases. Some Daily Tasks and many Loyalty game rewards require spending real money. Mistplay advises waiting until a game's loyalty status shows "Active" before buying anything, or you may not get gems. Spending money on games to earn gift cards rarely makes financial sense.
Rules That Can Get You Banned
Mistplay's terms prohibit:
- VPNs, proxies or anything that hides your location
- Bots, emulators, scripts, autoclickers or any simulated gameplay
- Multiple accounts, or letting someone else use yours
- Disposable or auto-forwarding email addresses
- Fake accounts or manipulating the referral program
Accounts flagged by its fraud system are put on hold, and you can contact support if you think it's a mistake. Mistplay can also close an account after 18 months of inactivity.

Common Questions About Mistplay
How many units is $5 on Mistplay?
Mistplay doesn't publish fixed prices, and its economy disclosure says rates vary by user. Third-party reviews commonly report around 1,800 units for a $5 gift card. Check the Shop in your app for your actual prices.
Does Mistplay pay real money?
Yes, through gift cards and PayPal rewards in the Shop. Units themselves have no cash value, and you can redeem up to $550 worth of rewards per year.
Is Mistplay on iPhone?
Yes, but only in the US and Canada. The iPhone app uses "points" instead of units. The original Android app is available more widely through Google Play.
Why is Mistplay not giving me units?
Usually tracking is off, the game was installed before, you launched it outside Mistplay, your phone is in a power- or data-saving mode, or you hit the 2-hour daily or 20-checkpoint cap.
Is Mistplay Worth It?
Mistplay is worth it if you already spend time playing mobile games and want something back for it. It's legitimate, rewards arrive quickly, and new games are part of the fun. It's not worth it as a way to make money. The pay per hour is low, the caps are strict, and the best rewards increasingly involve in-app purchases.
If you want gaming rewards that pay more per game, compare our KashKick review and Freecash review, or see more ways to get paid to test video games. Don't confuse these with cash game apps that charge entry fees, which we cover in our Solitaire Cash review. If your goal is real side income, paid research studies pay far more per hour.
