Donating plasma is one of the few ways to earn money that needs no skills, no application and no experience. You show up, sit in a chair for about an hour, and get paid on a prepaid card. That's why "how much does plasma donation pay" gets searched thousands of times a month.

The honest answer: new donors can often earn several hundred dollars in their first month, while regular donors typically earn less per visit once the welcome bonuses end. This guide breaks down what the biggest plasma companies say they pay, the federal limits on how often you can donate, who qualifies, and how to earn more. All figures come from each company's own website, checked on October 5, 2026. Pay varies by center and changes often, so confirm the current offer at your local center before you go.

How Much Do Plasma Centers Pay?

Plasma companies don't publish one national pay rate. Each center sets its own amounts and promotions, usually with a large bonus for new donors. Here's what each company advertised in October 2026:

  • CSL Plasma: up to $800 in your first month, and up to $100 for your first donation. Paid on a prepaid card. Referrals earn iGive Rewards points.
  • Octapharma Plasma: up to $750 with bonuses during your first 35 days. Paid on a prepaid debit card, loaded within 24 hours. Offers referral bonuses and OctaRewards tiers.
  • Parachute: up to $200 for your first three donations.
  • BioLife Plasma: new donor offers are set by each center (check your center's page or the BioLife app). Paid on a BioLife Debit Mastercard. Offers a Buddy Bonus for referrals and My BioLife Rewards points.
  • Grifols: offers are set by each center. Paid on a prepaid debit card after your first donation. Unlimited referrals with a DonorHub code.
  • ADMA BioCenters: "special compensation" for new donors, set by each center. Pays $100 per referred friend through its Buddy Bonus.

Every company adds fine print saying amounts vary by location and can change without notice. The headline numbers are maximums, and you usually only get the full amount by completing a set number of donations within the first month.

What Regular Donors Earn

Once the new donor bonus ends, pay per visit usually drops. Companies rarely publish exact returning donor rates. Octapharma says most regular donors "earn hundreds a month, depending on donation frequency, available promotions, and referrals."

Several things affect what you're paid per visit:

  • Your weight. The amount of plasma collected depends on your body weight, and Octapharma lists donation volume as a factor in pay.
  • How often you donate. Some centers pay more for the second donation in a week.
  • Promotions. Seasonal bonuses, monthly donation goals and loyalty points can add up.
  • Your location. Centers in competitive areas often pay more to attract donors.

Octapharma also lists your hematocrit (the share of red blood cells in your blood) as a factor in what you earn.

How Often Can You Donate Plasma?

Federal rules limit plasma donation to twice in any 7-day period, with at least 2 days between donations (21 CFR 640.65). Grifols puts it simply: you can donate twice a week as long as the donations are two days apart. That means a maximum of about eight or nine donations a month.

Don't try to get around the limit by donating at more than one company. Grifols warns that donating at multiple centers to bypass the FDA limits can lead to permanent disqualification.

How long it takes: BioLife says your first visit takes at least two hours because of paperwork and a physical exam, and later visits take about an hour. Grifols also says a typical donation takes about 60 minutes.

Can You Make $1,000 a Month Donating Plasma?

Usually not as a regular donor. A few new donor promotions approach $800, but those are one-time offers spread across your first month. After that, you're limited to about eight or nine donations a month, so reaching $1,000 would take a very high pay rate per visit plus bonuses. A few hundred dollars a month is a more realistic expectation for a consistent donor, and it varies widely by center.

Who Can Donate Plasma?

Requirements vary slightly by company. Grifols lists these:

  • Age: 18 to 69
  • Weight: at least 110 pounds (50 kg). BioLife also requires at least 110 pounds.
  • Health: generally good health, checked with a physical exam at your first visit and a health questionnaire, vital signs and blood tests at every visit
  • Documents: a valid photo ID, proof of your Social Security number (or a Border Crossing Card) and proof of your current address

FDA rules also require centers to weigh you and test your total protein level before every donation (it must be between 6.0 and 9.0 grams per deciliter), and to repeat your physical exam at least once a year.

Common reasons people get turned away include a protein or iron level outside the allowed range, a recent tattoo or piercing, certain medications and some health conditions. The center's screening staff decide on the day.

How to Earn More From Plasma Donation

  1. Compare centers near you. New donor offers differ a lot between companies, and even between centers of the same company. Check each company's website or app for your local amounts.
  2. Time your first month. New donor bonuses usually require a certain number of donations within a set window, such as Octapharma's first 35 days. Plan your schedule so you hit every donation.
  3. Donate twice a week. Some centers pay more for the second visit in a week, and loyalty programs often reward consistency.
  4. Join the loyalty program. CSL's iGive, BioLife's My BioLife Rewards and Octapharma's OctaRewards add points or bonuses on top of standard pay.
  5. Refer friends. Most companies pay a referral bonus once your friend completes their donations. ADMA advertises $100 per referred friend.
  6. Prepare so you don't get deferred. Eat a protein-rich meal, drink plenty of water, and avoid fatty foods before you donate. A low protein reading or a failed screening means no donation and no pay that day.

Is Plasma Donation Money Taxable?

Generally, yes. Plasma payments count as income. BioLife says it doesn't issue tax documents and tells donors to consult a tax specialist, so keep your own records of what you earn. Your card's transaction history is the easiest way to track it.

Side Effects and Safety

Plasma donation is regulated by the FDA, and centers are inspected regularly. Most people have no problems, but common side effects include dehydration, fatigue, lightheadedness and bruising where the needle goes in. Some donors feel tingling in their lips or fingers from citrate, the anticoagulant used during donation, because it temporarily lowers calcium. Tell the staff right away if you feel unwell during a donation.

Grifols recommends waiting two to three days after donating plasma before giving whole blood, and eight weeks (56 days) after giving whole blood before donating plasma.

Common Questions About Plasma Donation Pay

How much do you get for your first plasma donation?

It depends on the company and center. CSL Plasma advertises up to $100 for a first donation at some centers. Other companies spread their new donor bonus over several visits, such as Parachute's up to $200 for your first three donations.

Does BioLife or CSL pay more?

It depends on your location. CSL advertises up to $800 in your first month, while BioLife sets new donor offers center by center. Compare the current offers at the centers closest to you.

Why did I only get $40 for donating plasma?

Most likely because your new donor bonus ended, or you're on a lower pay tier for your weight or donation frequency. Ask your center for its pay schedule.

How do plasma centers pay you?

Almost all pay on a reloadable prepaid debit card, loaded automatically after each donation. BioLife uses a BioLife Debit Mastercard, and Octapharma says funds load within 24 hours.

Is Donating Plasma Worth It?

For many people, yes. The new donor bonuses are some of the easiest money available, and the work is mostly sitting still for an hour. It also helps patients: Grifols says it takes about 130 donations a year to treat one adult with primary immunodeficiency.

It's less attractive once the bonuses end. Each visit takes an hour or more plus travel, and you can only donate twice a week.
